uBeam Creates Wireless Charging Technology Similar to Wi-Fi

Imagine a world where your gadgets charge without ever needing a cable. That future might be nearer than we think, thanks to the innovative efforts of a startup called uBeam.

This company has pioneered a method to transmit power wirelessly using ultrasonic waves, a significant leap over traditional inductive charging methods that require close proximity between the charger and the device.

uBeam’s technology harnesses ultrasonic transducers to transform electrical power from a wall outlet into sound energy that is imperceptible to both humans and animals. This sound is then captured by a receiver attached to the electronic device, where it is converted back into electrical energy to recharge the battery.

This breakthrough could revolutionize the way we power our electronic devices.

The vision of uBeam extends beyond personal use; they are also targeting commercial applications. They foresee a future where venues like cafes could have these transducers installed, allowing patrons to effortlessly charge their devices simply by being in the vicinity, enhancing customer experience and convenience.

The concept was brought to life by two alumni from the University of Pennsylvania, who showcased their initial prototype, constructed from readily available components, to technology journalists Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the D9 conference.
